Roll Baby Roll

First ever roll - April 24/25, 2011!

She's rolled over a couple of times, so far. Once while she was lying on our bed on the quilt, which was doubled over on the bed. She rolled off the quilt and onto the bed! An another time, in her gym, I found her almost completely turned, with just her shoulders in the side position while she gazed raptly at the gym mirror!

One bata two (1/2)

On April 19, 2011, Ishi turned 6 months old! Another big milestone.

Here she is with her fruit and walnut chocolate cupcake!

She had her six monthly doc visit, and apart from instructing us on how to wean her, he also gave us pointers in helping her sit unaided! Back home and within a couple of days, she can sit up unaided!!

Clever girl! Now if she would only complete her rolling over goal!

Mukhe-Bhaat

Ishi had her Mukhe-bhaat (annaprashan) ceremony on April 27, 2011. Her maternal grandparents organised the function. This function inaugurates her entry into the world of proper food!

Here is a video we made documenting this momentous event!

Food can be grueling!

Ishi had her first unsupplemented (by breastmilk) meal today. For lunch, she had half a katori of what I like to call White Gruel. We took rice and dal, roasted them, mixied into powder, cooked with ghee (into halwa like consistency), then added milk to thin it and sugar to taste. Ishi ate half a katori of the mixture without any fuss, and has been happily playing ever since! Her last feed was at 12pm. Gruel Lunch at 3pm. I'm planning to feed her next at 5-6pm. First proper meal! Woohoo!! :) And the date again is auspicious! Yesterday was Baisakhi, today is Bihu and tomorrow is Poila Baisakh (Bengali New Year)! They are all considered the start of a new solar year and a new harvest season, the time for great rejoicing and of course eating! :)

Breastfeed is the ultimate convenience food - no preparation, no planning, no feeding difficulties! However, after 6 months, the baby's nutrition needs outgrow breastmilk, and it needs to be supplemented by other foods. Though many people wean off earlier, we've followed the standard pediatrician guideline of exclusive breastfeed till 6 months (well almost :) another 5 days to go!). Of course her maternal grandfather would not have heard of anything less anyway!! Post her annaprashan though, we have been getting her to taste different foods, leading upto today's solitary unsupplemented meal. Here is a list of foods she has tasted:
- Payesh (at annaprashan)
- Dal gravy
- Curd
- Paneer gravy (milk based home-made)
- Plain Khichdi
- Mashed Banana

So far, she liked all except the curd which was a little sour! The dal gravy too went in fine, but came out after a bit, spreading its turmeric colored residue all over her clothes, bib and daddy's shirt (who happened to be holding her at that time!) While turmeric has great medicinal properties and is a staple in our diet, its propensity to fast-color clothes is already giving me laundry nightmares! Ah well :)

So what is plan for ahead?
We plan to follow the supplementary weaning principles, gradually introducing other foods, till breastmilk becomes supplementary food. I'm also reading about Baby-led weaning, where babies are encouraged to handle food on their own as young as 6 months!

On the practical front, here are some thoughts for next steps:
- Egg yolk for breakfast
- White Gruel for lunch
- Khichdi with mixed veg for dinner
- Mashed Banana for snacks. Introduce stewed apples later
- Peeled Carrot to suck on (raw, part boiled or boiled - to be decided)

Plus next weekend, we go for her 6 monthly check-up and will ask for a multi-vitamin, mineral supplement prescription too, plus run her diet through her pediatrician.

Here is to a new beginning! Shubho Nabobarsho!

Kick-Offs

Ishi's developed a new habit - kicking off her blanket/covering sheet. Little feet are always kicking and woe betide any blanket or sheet that tries to cover them! This morning I found her whimpering in the cot without any cover, with really cold hands and feet. Our AC too recently got serviced, and since then its just recognizes one setting - Antartica Cold - even though we set it as high as 29C!! It seems that most of her kicking starts in the morning, so now we plan to switch off the AC in the mornings. As for all the kicking...well at least it will help in developing her leg muscles!! Or so I hope :)

While she is busy kicking her covers, we are gearing up to kick off her supplementary feeding and weaning process as she approaches her 6-month birthday. Now that is going to be a another big story!!!

I'm no Dumb Belle or How I play Humpty Dumpty

The first toy to come apart under Ishi's not-so-tender ministrations - a dumb bell shaped colorful rattle!

The Date: April Fools Day, 2011!

Just playing in Dadi's lap by itself is fun enough, who needs toys! Ishi threw her rattle on the floor while playing on Dadi's lap in the morning and the toy broke apart. But then Lila hunted out the pieces and put it back together again! Very Humpty Dumpty! Then she proceeded to break it again in the evening! This time mommy put it together. Lets see how long it lasts :)
